Nana’s Irish Soda Bread

Servings 3 loaves


  • 9 cups flour
  • 3 tbsp baking powder
  • 3 tbsp baking soda
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 6 eggs
  • 5 1/4 cups buttermilk
  • 6 tbsp butter melted
  • 3 cups raisins


  • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and sugar and set aside.
  • In a separate large bowl, whisk eggs. Add buttermilk and mix until combined. 
  • Melt the butter and set aside to cool.
  • Create a hole in the center of the dry ingredients. Pour in egg-buttermilk mixture and stir until combined.
  • Add the butter when mixing starts to get difficult. Do not over mix.
  • Fold in raisins.
  • Distribute evenly between 3 greased and floured loaf pans.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for about an hour or until golden brown and until a butter knife inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean.
  • Cool on wire rack.
